Big Shot SMO for Older Children in Hamilton
Stronger SMO Support for Bigger Kids and Teens
As children grow, a standard SMO may no longer give enough support. The Big Shot SMO is built from thicker material so it can steady the feet of older, taller or heavier children and teens.
At Foot Foundation in Hamilton, we assess your child and recommend the level of support that matches their size, their feet and their activities.
What Is a Big Shot SMO?
An SMO (supramalleolar orthosis) wraps the foot and finishes just above the ankle bones. The Big Shot SMO uses a thicker, stronger material than the standard Surestep SMO, so it can handle more body weight without losing its shape.
It is a Dynamic Stability brace. It steadies the foot and ankle while still allowing natural movement for walking, school and sport.
Which Children Might It Help?
A Big Shot SMO may be considered for older or heavier children who:
have feet that roll in significantly (pronation)
have low muscle tone and tire easily (hypotonia)
have feet and ankles that wobble in several directions under weight
need help to stand steadily
walk on their toes a little (mild toe walking)
have outgrown the support of a standard SMO
Big Shot Lite and Big Shot
There are two versions, chosen by your child's weight:
Versions like Big Shot Lite suits children around for 23–41 kg
Versions like Big Shot SMO suits children around for Over 36 kg
These are guides, not strict rules. We choose based on your child's weight, activity level and how much control their feet need.
Has your child outgrown their current brace?
What to Expect
Assessment: we check walking, foot posture, flexibility, strength and muscle tone.
Measuring: if a Big Shot SMO suits, we capture your child's foot shape.
Fitting: we check comfort, walking and shoe fit.
Break-in: short wearing times to start, building up over a week or two.
Reviews: regular checks, especially through growth spurts.
Everyday Life With a Big Shot SMO
Shoes: a supportive shoe with a wide opening, usually one size bigger. Teens often prefer a roomy trainer.
Socks: thin, snug and seam-free.
Skin checks: mild redness fading in 20–30 minutes is normal. Lasting marks or blisters need adjusting.
Sport: most children play sport in their SMOs. We'll talk through what suits your child's activities.
Cleaning: wipe with a damp cloth and air dry away from heaters.
Is the Big Shot SMO Right for My Child?
Other options may suit better if your child:
is under about 23 kg → Surestep SMO
mainly walks on their toes → Toe Walking SMO
has a stiff foot shape that doesn't correct → Max Control SMO
needs more ankle control than an SMO can give → 2-Stage AFO range

Frequently Asked Questions
My child has outgrown their SMO. Is the Big Shot the next step?
Often, yes. We reassess first, because some children need more ankle control instead, and others no longer need a brace at all.
Will a teenager actually wear it?
Many do, once they feel the difference in comfort and stability. We involve teens in the decision and talk through shoes and sport.
Is it bulkier than a standard SMO?
It is slightly thicker because it is stronger. It still fits inside a supportive shoe.
Can my child play sport in it?
Usually yes. We'll discuss your child's sports and what works best for each.
Does a heavier child always need a Big Shot?
Not always. Weight is one factor alongside foot flexibility, tone and how much control is needed.
